Favourite Christmas Music

Now that it’s officially December, I feel like it’s more socially acceptable to listen to Christmas music–although, let’s be honest: I’ve been listening to it since November.

This year, I’m having a few friends over for a small holiday get-together, so I’ve been even more focused on Christmas music than usual, trying to craft just the right playlist. I think I’ve made some decent progress, combining more than a few different kinds of Christmas music.

Here are some of my favourites.

If you like the classics…

You can’t go wrong with The Carpenters’ Christmas Portrait. The entire album is absolutely beautiful, but “Christmas Song” is the one that makes me feel warmest and happiest in my heart. I have wonderful memories of listening to this album while helping my mom decorate her tree.

I know that a lot of people loathe “Santa Baby”, but I still love it. Is it weird to listen to a sexy song aimed at a guy who brings kids toys? Maybe. But come on! It’s iconic! And it’s Eartha Kitt. Who doesn’t love Eartha Kitt?!

“Rocking Around The Christmas Tree” makes me want to, well, do just that. It’s a great tune to bop around to while you’re doing something Christmassy, like decorating or prepping for a party.

Obviously I can’t skip over “Jingle Bell Rock”, and obviously of all of the videos that I could link to, it’s going to be the performance in Mean Girls. That’s just, like, the rules of feminism.

If you like updated classics…

She & Him’s version of The Beach Boys’ “Christmas Day” is one of my all-time favourite Christmas songs, even though the album was only released a few years ago. Zooey Deschanel’s voice is stunning, and the song perfectly captures the magic and love of the season.

By combining two classics (“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “Carol of the Bells”), Trans-Siberian Orchestra managed to make an entirely new holiday hit with “Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24”. As an added bonus, whenever I hear this song, I always picture Dwight Schrute rocking out to it.

If you want something for the kiddos…

I spent more time than I’m proud of deciding which song to feature from Muppet Christmas Carol. In the end, I decided that “It Feels Like Christmas” was the one that made me feel most filled with Christmas joy. (But “One More Sleep Til Christmas” is a very close second!)

I get it. Alvin and the Chipmunks are really annoying. But I have such fond memories of listening to “Christmas Don’t Be Late” as a child. And I still want a hula hoop!

Another song that everyone finds annoying, but I find super endearing. I think maybe it’s the FIVE! ARGYLE! SOCKS! that gets me in this rendition of “12 Days of Christmas”. Adorable.

If you want something poppy…

You didn’t think I’d write a post about Christmas music without including Wham!’s “Last Christmas”, did you? (Also, how does one punctuate “Wham!” when it’s being used as a possessive?) It’s 80’s pop perfection. A must-have on any Christmas playlist.

Hopefully I built up enough goodwill with Wham! that you won’t get too mad that I’m including Justin Bieber in this list. Sure, “Mistletoe” is pretty damn cheesy, but you’ve gotta admit that it’s catchy as hell. I simply mentioned it to a coworker last week and had it stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

I know. I can’t believe that I’m including anything associated with Justin Timberlake (NEVER FORGET!) in this list, but goddamn do I like NSYNC’s “Merry Chritsmas, Happy Holidays”. I think the fact that I’m including it despite my hatred for him just shows how much I like it (even though that kind of makes me hate myself just a little).

No matter what you’re in the mood for…

I saved the best for last. You can’t go wrong with a little Mimi during the holidays. CHRISTMAS IS MARIAH’S SEASON! All any of us want for Christmas is you, Mariah.

Here’s a playlist of all my favourite Christmas songs. Have any suggestions for ones I should add? Hit me up in the comments!
