2018 Resolutions

Happy New Year! I’m back and feeling refreshed after a lovely week at home with my parents, and ready to tackle a brand new year (well, mostly… I wouldn’t say no to another few days of vacation).

With that in mind, here are my resolutions for 2018.

For the last few years, I’ve set a reading goal for myself, increasing the number each year. In 2017, my goal was 30. Although it was a bit of a rush toward the end, I did manage to hit it. I think it was mostly Netflix and mindless browsing that kept me from easily meeting or exceeding my goal this year; many of my evenings were spent sprawled in the couch, scrolling through Buzzfeed or rewatching the same TV shows I’ve seen 100 times.

This year, I’d like to work at reading a little more each day, rather than reading in marathon stretches trying to hit my new goal of 33 books. Using a habit-tracking app called Loop, I’ve set up a goal to read at least 30 minutes each day, complete with a reminder when I get home from work so that I don’t just turn on the TV out of habit.

Establish a More Active Routine

When I first started reducing  my dosage of Prozac, I was really great at waking up early every morning to meditate and do yoga. As time went on and I was doing well without the medication, I started to favour a few extra minutes to sleep in, or a little extra time to get ready instead of spending the time doing what I knew I should be. As a result, my yoga habit is pretty much nonexistent at this point.

I really do feel better (mentally and physically) when I’m more active. I’m not much of a sports or gym person (I have zero coordination and working out in front of people makes me terribly anxious), so the things that have worked for me in the past are at-home yoga and walking. To help keep my habit of walking, at minimum I’m going to walk to and from the TTC on days when the weather is reasonable (i.e., it’s not raining or 800 degrees below zero) and use my Fitbit to track my steps (er, once I order a new charging cable for it). I’m also going to use that same habit tracker I mentioned above to make sure that I do yoga at least four mornings a week–and that I don’t hit the snooze button!


I’ve wanted to volunteer ever since I moved to Toronto, but I haven’t found the right opportunity. But, if I’m honest, I also haven’t really looked that hard. I let myself get discouraged when the opportunities I was interested in required more of a time commitment than I could reasonably provide, and then I just kind of dropped the whole idea. This year, I’m (finally) going to find a volunteering position that works for me so that I can give back to this awesome community I live in.
